[ARCHIVED] Fire Prevention Week, Oct 6-12: Smoke Alarms - Make them work for you!

As Fire Prevention Week is observed this week, the National Fire Protection Association reminds us of the critical role working smoke alarms play in keeping families safe from fire.

Here are links to the home fire escape plan and smoke alarm checklist, and an activity page for kids promoting the week provide by the Department of Emergency Management.

According to the NFPA, having functional smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by more than half (54 percent). Unfortunately, nearly three out of five home fire fatalities occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-functional ones.

Department of Emergency Management and Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue urges residents to follow these essential smoke alarm safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
  • Ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all household members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
